This year’s
Coconut Classic, organized by Julie Jenkins and
Fun Fur Flyball, will be held June 23-24 at the
Greensboro Sportsplex in Greensboro, North Carolina. The event is being sponsored by
the City of Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Coconut Classic is the first Flyball event that 1TDC™ ever attended, and it’s one we look forward to every year! This two-day unlimited tournament will see 43 teams (14 Regular, 7 Multi-breed, 21 Open, and 1 Veteran) competing in two rings with 63+ feet of runback. Over the course of two days, there will be a total of 190 races (110 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday). On Friday, before the tournament starts, mat time will be available to participants beginning at 4 p.m. If time permits, mat time may also be made available to participants on Saturday night. Each dog (and human) participating in this year’s tournament will receive a welcome bag filled with goodies, including chews, stuffed toys, balls, and more. Additionally, all teams (7 per team) will receive a placement prize. For those unfamiliar with the Coconut Classic, this is not your average K9 sports event. In addition to the flyball tournament, the Coconut Classic features a costume contest, team spirit competition, and more. The following is a list of awards that will be given out during this year’s event:
-
King and Queen of the Nut- These awards will be given out to tournament participants who dress up in unique costumes and demonstrate an attitude of “royal benevolence.”
-
Lynn Hull Team Spirit Award- This award, which was introduced in honor of teammate Lynn Hull, will go the club that creates a fun theme through decorations, costumes, and activities. As a bonus, the club that wins will receive a free team entry to the 2019 Coconut Classic.
-
Susie Ellis Sportsmanship Award- This award will be presented to a competitor who consistently displays good sportsmanship and goes above and beyond to help others.
-
Dream Team- At the end of the weekend, the panel will be selecting six dogs, a boxloader, and a coach for the Coconut Classic Dream Team.
The Coconut Classic is one "nutty" event!
Though the registration date has since passed, spectators are welcome to attend.
